Intel BX80601940 Review by Brian Desilets (Colorado Springs)

This is clearly an upgrade from the Core 2 Duo processor. No issues with the chip and everything runs silky smooth.

I would recommend not getting the extreme version given the astronomical price. Get a good after market cooler and overclock if you'd like but I'm fine running this at stock speeds.

Intel BX80601940 Review by John Holmes (Los Angeles)

What another reviewer failed miserbly in explaining is the real differenced between the 920 and 940. Sure, most of us can do simple math and look and clearly see the different speeds.....thankfully Intel marketing is a little smarter than that. If one was so intelligent in doing their research and the real performance that these chips do....they would never degrade a breakthrough in computing technology. the 940 performs similar to the 965, however the 965 is less restricted in the flexibility for the professional computer user or gamer. The numbers for all 3 of these processors is leaps and bounds higher than anything on the market. One might actually need to do a little reading to learn this

Intel BX80601940 Review by Jems

I bought this chip in the spring of 2008. Since about 2 months later, I have ran it OC'd almost consistently at 3.6-3.7 Ghz. Last year, my PSU fried, and frying my board as well. I was worried about the chip, but when I put it in my new board, it still worked like a charm. Matter of fact, the last six months it's now OC'ed at 4.0 Ghz.

I've had this chip in and out of boards 5 or 6 times, accidentally got thermal paste on the bottom of the CPU, even seen the heat numbers get up into the 90c + a few times when I was just starting out. This chip has taken it all and keeps performing.

I almost knocked a star off because the chip won't die, so I can't justify upgrading.

As for the review concerning buying the 920 vs. the 940, I'm sorry, but it just doesn't make sense. There is a reason why the 920's are clocked lower. Every I7 chip is made from the same material at the same time. The way they choose to clock them, concerns how close to "perfect" each chip is as they divide them out. Thus, a 920 is closer to the variance limit than the 940. For normal processing, that's not a problem usually. But if anyone is buying this chip to overclock, go for the 940 (if you aren't jumping to the LGA 1155 socket but don't want to spend any more money). This chip simply won't die... dang it.
